Yesterday VRFocus reported on comments from Supermassive Games, developer of this year’s popular PlayStation 4 exclusive, Until Dawn, that confirmed it had talked about PlayStation VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) support for the title. But while the team had considered how that integration might work, it was suggested that VR fans wouldn’t be seeing such support anytime soon. Now a new rumour has cropped up reporting that, while the main title won’t support PlayStation VR, a new piece of DLC could do so.

Destructoid is claiming to have this week received an email that suggests Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) is carrying out market testing for a new piece of DLC for the story-driven horror experience. The content is reportedly titled Rush of Blood and takes the form of a first-person shooter (FPS) that supports the upcoming VR device. This is quite a change from the traditional Until Dawn, which plays out in third-person. The site also notes that it has verified and confirmed with a second independent source.

The email reads: “Well you get transported around inside a mine cart; it’s very literally an on-rails experience. There are a few scattered jumpscares [sic], as you’d expect, but I played the same 20 minute section twice (once with DS4, once with dual Move controllers), so I’m hoping the full DLC is a lot more padded out. I didn’t see which character I was playing as, I’m not sure if it’s specified, but no names were mentioned at all.

“It starts off shooting targets in the snow, then moves toward a house and as you get deeper into the house, enemies start appearing (I believe they were Wendigos). The frequently reused jumpscare is the ‘ghost’ from inside the house in Until Dawn, who you end up fighting for the final area I played. Upon killing the ghost, the game would crash every time.”

Though surprising, there are several intriguing aspects to this report. The first is the use of PlayStation Move motion controllers. PlayStation fans will remember that Until Dawn was originally introduced as a PlayStation 3 title that exclusively used the PlayStation Move. Not only that but the original version of the title was in first-person too. Combined with past rumours that Until Dawn would see VR support and the fact that Supermassive Games has developed its own PlayStation VR tech demo and attended VR panels, and this rumour has a lot of weight behind it.

VRFocus will continue to follow Until Dawn‘s potential VR support, reporting back with the latest updates on the title.
