With its positional-tracked controllers the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) is ideally suited to recreating a variety of sports in virtual reality (VR). Available through Steam Early Access programme is Rec Room by indie developer Against Gravity.

Rec Room has been built around the idea of a VR social club, where players can gather together, hang out in the locker room, customise their appearance, then head out and play three activities, Zero-G Paddle Ball, Disc Golf and Dodgeball.

The locker room functions as the multiplayer hub, but rather than just finding someone to compete against it has a far more social aspect. So players can meetup with friends or make new ones before starting a round of Disc Golf.

Against Gravity aims to be in early access for around two months, during which new features including more customisation options, activities and more will be added.

Rec Room is completely free to play, the studio is looking at adding some content that won’t be free, saying: “After launch, we plan to add some premium features over time that cost money (examples might be scheduled tournaments, or special avatar items). But our current plan is to always have a free tier that lets you get into the game and have a great experience. That could change depending on how the VR market develops, but that’s our current thinking.”

This is the first VR title from Against Gravity and VRFocus will continue to bring you any further updates released by the developer.
