It was revealed last year during the PlayStation Experience event, San Francisco, that Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin was coming to the PlayStation 4 on PlayStation VR. Now it has emerged that the half way reboot virtual reality (VR) title will be a launch title for the console head-mounted display (HMD). Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin is a VR sister title to Double Fine Productions’ original classic PC and console title, Psychonauts. The idea behind the videogame is that there is a continuation of the first instalment of Psychonauts, where after the completion of the title Raz is recognised as a PSI-Cadet, but as the story comes to a finish Truman Zanotto, the Head of Psychonauts, is kidnapped and the team fly off to the rescue. It was stated in a blog post by PlayStation that this title “will bridge the story gap between the original Psychonauts and the forthcoming sequel”. In this VR spin-off, it will be a first-person experience, and will be launched alongside other titles such as a remastered verson of point and click adventure, Day of the Tentacle, and Full Throttle will follow soon after. Tim Schafer, a developer at Double Fine, spoke to VRFocus last year regarding the step into the virtual world which he described as “really natural”, and that he was really excited to be working in VR as it allows him to step into worlds. He went on to discuss the sequel to Psychonauts, which he said: “Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin is going to come out next year before Psychonauts 2 which comes out in 2018”.

As this is a launch title, it will be released alongside the PlayStation VR HMD which will be available from October of this year, only four months from now.
