Back in September 2015 VRFocus reported on the surprising news that Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, the controversial spin-off to Koei Tecmo’s fighting franchise, would be getting support for Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) PlayStation VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) on PlayStation 4. Adding VR support to a series that’s been criticised for its depiction of women would almost certainly cause further debate within the western videogame community, but it appears that won’t be happening as Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 seemingly won’t be releasing in the region.

That is according to a Facebook comment from the official Dead or Alive account. Replying to one fan asking about as possible western release for the title, the account noted: “We do not bring DOAX3 to the west and won’t have any plan change in the future. Thank you for asking.”

When later asked about the reason behind this decision, the account pointed towards the criticism the series has faced in the past: “Do you know many issues happening in video game industry with regard to how to treat female in video game industry? We do not want to talk those things here. But certainly we have gone through in last year or two to come to our decision. Thank you.”

Instead of a fighting videogame the Dead or Alive Xtreme titles see players take part in games of volleyball. The third entry in the series continues to show women in beachwear, though is also set to be the first edition that will feature male characters. In the past, Producer Yosuke Hayashi has suggested an edited version of the title could still release in the west.

Elsewhere, another popular fighting title, Tekken 7, recently confirmed that it will be supporting PlayStation VR. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all videogames coming to the HMD, reporting back with the latest updates on them.
