This week has seen quite a few announcements of titles from Gamescom 2016, but now there is a testament for the quality of the virtual reality (VR) titles – and hardware – that have featured during the event, as PlayStation, Battlezone, and Wilson’s Heart all win big at the Gamescom Awards 2016.

PlayStation VR has been listed as the winner for the category of Best Hardware, and it’s no secret that the head-mounted display (HMD) and its accessories made a big impression on the event, with the many stalls and demos that were on show.

Twisted Pixel’s Wilson’s Heart won Best Virtual Reality Game. Wilson’s Heart puts players in the body of Robert Wilson, a hospital patient who wakes up to find that his heart has been replaced by a mysterious device. The title has been described as having a “one-of-a-kind visual and narrative style” with the Oculus Touch controllers enabling natural hand gestures and the highest levels of interaction with the in game world, which is key to Wilson uncovering what’s happened to him.

And Rebellion’s Battlezone has won Best Casual Game – and this is in a category up against other non-VR titles. Rebellion’s Battlezone is a VR reboot of the classic arcade tanker title, and has been hailed as a pretty impressive PlayStation VR title.

The Gamescom Awards 2016 is an award ceremony that took place on the social media stage on Friday, 19 August 2016. This year’s international expert jury had selected the 73 nominated products and games from over 200 entries to the most coveted prize of the European gaming industry.
