Oculus VR is extremely confident in its Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), even with the $599 USD price tag. This week it emerged that, before the company was purchased by Facebook, it had planned on simply releasing an updated version of its second development kit (DK2) for the consumer version of the device, but decided to improve upon it once the social networking giant came on board. The results might be costly, but Oculus VR is adamant that it has ‘the best headset’ with the content and long-term support to match it.
Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey himself said as much during his Ask Me Anything session on Reddit this week, which followed the launch of the Oculus Rift pre-orders and the first day of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. When asked how the Oculus Rift can compete with one of its main rivals, the HTC Vive PC-based HMD from HTC and Valve, Luckey simply replied: “I can’t comment on price speculation, but I think the Rift is the best headset with the best content and the best long-term support.”
The first Oculus Rifts will be delivered at the end of March 2016 for the first people to get in a pre-order and those that backed enough money to get a first development kit (DK1) edition of the device during 2012’s Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign. The kit will include a bunch of free additions such as CCP Games’ EVE: Valkyrie and Playful’s Lucky’s Tale, the former of which will be free only to those that pre-order the kit. Also included is an Xbox One controller and the wireless adapter needed to run it on PC as well as an Oculus Remote for simplified control.
