Following its unveiling at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Los Angeles, back in June 2015, Starbreeze Studios has frequently showcased their upcoming OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead at numerous events. Today, the publisher has confirmed that the title will be made available to consumers in 2017.

The news comes as part of an announcement that sees Starbreeze Studios having received investment from Smilegate and penning an agreement for the release of the formers’ upcoming titles in Asia under the latter’s guidance. The partnership will see Starbreeze Studios receive a 10 year right to develop, publish and distribute an all-new first person co-operative videogame on Smilegate’s CROSSFIRE franchise for western markets and distribution rights on the Smilegate platform, which will see editions of PAYDAY 2 and OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead launch in Asian markets via the platform.

The press release, issued today, states: “OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead will be expanded with more content where an Asian version will be developed for simultaneous launch with the western version. To maximize the new opportunities, Starbreeze, 505 Games and Skybound have decided to release the game in all markets during the second half of 2017. The partners are convinced this will pave the way to success, maximize revenues and cement it as a tent pole product for the next decade to come.”

It should be noted that although OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead was unveiled as a virtual reality (VR) exclusive title, no mention of the proprietary head-mounted display (HMD), Star VR, was made during this announcement.
