Both Oculus VR and HTC have partnered with plenty of PC manufacturers to offer virtual reality (VR) certified machines for the launch of both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive respectively. These are rigs that either meet or exceed the recommended specifications for the given head-mounted display (HMD), allowing the owner to access the content that will be released for them as they start to arrive in just a few weeks’ time. One company that isn’t included in these deals, however, is Origin. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t working on its own VR ready rigs.
Origin is now rolling out a line of Chronos machines that the company notes is VR-ready for both the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. Indeed, the cheapest model, set at $1,799 USD, matches the specs for both with 8GB of RAM, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970, and an Intel i7 processor. The rig can be customised to accommodate more powerful innards, however, including the Nvidia GTX Titan and up to 32GB of memory. Due to the independent nature of the machine, it doesn’t appear that any sort of bundle with a HMD will be offered right now.
Oculus VR is offering bundles with the Oculus Rift for its Oculus Ready PCs, which include rigs from Alienware, Dell and Asus. Offers start at $1,499. HTC, meanwhile, is also planning to offer some bundles for the HTC Vive with its partners in MSI, Alienware and HP, though it’s not yet clear what these bundles will be and how much of a ‘discount’ of sorts they’ll offer on the $799 kit. The Oculus Rift starts to ship in a few weeks’ time on 28th March, while the HTC Vive will be making its first deliveries on 5th April.
