The Oculus Rift costs $599 USD. That’s significantly higher than the $200 – $400 price range the company had offered in the past, and you might also assume that it negates the $1,500 ballpark figure that Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe has previously put on the cost of both the kit and an Oculus Ready PC, which will meet the set of specifications required to actually run the device, starting at $950. That’s not the case, however, as Oculus VR has confirmed that it will be offering bundles that help knock some of the cost of the pair down.
In the Oculus Blog post announcing the price and shipping date of the Oculus Rift the company mentions that another pre-order scheme will be going live in February 2016. This campaign will let fans pick up both an Oculus Ready PC and an Oculus Rift starting at $1499. Even with the cheapest model of the Oculus Ready PC from Asus, that’s a saving of $50. Alienware and Dell will also be offering their own Oculus Ready Rigs for $999. It remains to be seen which models will be included in this cheaper bundle and what other bundles the company will be offering. Those that do pre-order today can take advantage of the bundle price later on.
Though the $599 tag is obviously steep, the Oculus Rift does include a wide range of free additions. Those that pre-order the kit before it starts to arrive for the first customers in March 2016 will be getting a free copy of EVE: Valkyrie from CCP Games, while everyone that picks it up will also get Lucky’s Tale and an Xbox One controller along with a wireless adapter to make it work with the Oculus Rift. Prices for other HMDs such as PlayStation VR and HTC Vive are yet to be revealed, but will serve as the true as to how reasonable this tag is.
