Today virtual reality (VR) specialist Oculus VR announced the launch of its first full production version of the software development kit (SKD) for the Oculus Rift, 1.0. The kit is only seeing a limited release, however, aimed at developers that will soon be shipping their launch titles for the head-mounted display (HMD) either alongside or around its release in Q1 2016. These developers are also being given access to early builds of the consumer Oculus Rift. Those with the device’s second development kit (DK2) need not worry, however, as SDK 1.0 will still support it.

Oculus VR’s Tom Forsyth confirmed as much over on Twitter. Responding to one fan speculating that SDK 1.0 would not support DK2, Forsyth replied: “Nope, 1.0 supports DK2.

“It was a good guess! But we wouldn’t do that to you lovely folks,” the developer later added. This will likely come as a relief to the many that will have been working with DK2 for around a year and a half now. It’s not yet clear when 1.0 will become available for everyone, but it’s likely that the final version of the Oculus Rift will be much more readily available when it finally does.

VRFocus will continue to follow the Oculus Rift closely, reporting back with the latest updates on it.
