The Sundance Film Festivals New Horizons has had a wealth of talent showcasing virtual reality (VR) and 360-degree movies over the last week. Filmmakers, production studios and animation companies are keen to showcase a mixture of work that seeks stretch viewers imaginations and understanding of VR and what it can do, other than just playing videogames. At the festival Oculus Story Studios unveiled Dear Angelica, combining illustration and VR filmmaking in one. The studio has now released a behind-the-scenes look at how the films illustrators created the project.

For Dear Angelica, the Oculus Story Studio team decided to build an internal production tool called Quill, that would allow the illustrators on the project to paint entire scenes in VR using Oculus Rift HMD and Oculus Touch position-tracked controllers. The technique was designed to give the artists complete freedom to create directly in VR bringing them away from more traditional medium of pen and paper.

The video reveals how the artists can quickly and intuitively draw and create their ideas, from simple line drawings up to fully realised characters. Its been compared to HTC Vive’s Tilt Brush although a consumer release isn’t expected.

VRFocus will continue to bring you the latest project news from Oculus Story Studio as further announcements are made.
