Today sees the launch of NVIDIA’s entry level 10 series graphics card, the Geforce GTX 1060, which the company revealed a couple of weeks ago. The arrival of the GTX 1060 completes the line-up of new cards in the series, with the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 both launching in June and May 2016 respectively.

The GTX 1060 has been launched in direct competition with AMD’s RX 480 which sells for £180 GBP / £200 USD, slightly cheaper than the NVIDIA card at £240 / $250.

The specs for the NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 are:

CUDA Cores: 1280

Texture Units: 80

ROPS: 48

Core Clock: 1,506MHz

Boost Clock: 1,708MHz

Memory Bus Width: 192-bit

Memory Bandwidth: 192GB/s

Memory: 6GB GDDR5

Outputs: 3x DisplayPort 1.4, 1x HDMI 2.0b with support for 4K60 10/12b HEVC Decode, 1x dual-link DVI

Even though the GTX 1060 has launched today its not particularly available everywhere. In the US for example Amazon doesn’t currently list the product and Best Buy shows that it’s out of stock online. Other listed retail partners including B&H Photo Video, Newegg and Micro Center all show similar lack of stock, with listings stating ‘coming soon’ or ‘back order’.

The same goes for Amazon’s UK site, but PC specialist Overclockers UK does list a wide variety of variants with some in stock and some available to pre-order.

One of the big selling points NVIDIA has been touting is the virtual reality (VR) compatibility. The release of the GTX 1060, GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 all mean the cost for upgrading systems to output the necessary power for head-mounted displays (HMDs) like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, has now reduced to a much more affordable level.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of NVIDIA, reporting back with any further updates.
