While high end virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) for the consumer market are few and far between, on the other end of the spectrum there’s a massive amount of choice for generic headsets that fit multiple smartphones. Crowd-funding platform Kickstarter has been awash with companies coming up with their own particular version, and for those wishing to standout from the very busy crowd they need to offer something unique. Launched this week by South Korean company NOONBiT, Inc. is a cardboard headset with adjustable lenses called Nunulo VR.
Created by Founder and CEO James Kim, an ex-optometrist, Nunulo VR’s lenses can be rotated for focal length adjustment and visual impairment, while the base of the lens can be moved for interpupillary distance adjustment – the distance between your eyes.
In coming up with his design Kim said: “I’ve noticed that most VR head mount devices on the market today are created in a manner that does not consider distinct eye conditions. This can lead to the deterioration of the eyes of users as well as headaches, dizziness and nausea. We’ve designed the Nunulo VR to be adjustable to each user’s specific visual circumstances, which will minimize eye strain so that users can enjoy virtual reality content more comfortably.”
Nunulo VR is looking to raise $15,000 USD through Kickstarter and before the end of the first 24 hours the campaign has already hit $11,532, at the time of writing. There’s a variety of backer tiers available with the most popular being the Super Early Bird offer for $29 which gets you one cardboard headset and a pair of lenses. The tiers go all the way up to $2,999, classed as a business bundle which will include 150 cardboard bodies and 100 pairs of lenses.
