Last week VRFocus reported on T-Mobile’s Home Run Derby in San Diego would be taking place today featuring a virtual reality (VR) experience created just for the event. Now 360-degree sports broadcasting specialist NextVR has announced it’ll be recording the event for fans to watch.
While NextVR has live-streamed numerous sports, for the T-Mobile Home Run Derby, all the coverage will be available on-demand approximately 15 minutes after the event has finished.
Created in partnership with Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), viewers will be able to get right on the field, watching the action from several cameras setup. As players hit home runs there will be an outfield camera to capture fan’s reactions. The immersive footage also includes live audio commentary by MLB.com analyst Mike Petriello.
“MLBAM is a known innovator in sports technology and we are honoured to work together as we continue to provide premier entertainment and sporting events in virtual reality,” said Brad Allen, NextVR Executive Chairman.
To watch the 2016 T-Mobile Home Run Derby you’ll need a Samsung Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) and the NextVR app which has a dedicated MLB channel. Additional highlights of the competition will then be made available at a later date.
Sporting events are starting to feature a lot more 360-degree coverage thanks to companies like NextVR, VOKE and NBC Sports. The latter will be covering this years Rio 2016 Olympics, broadcasting 85 hours worth of footage to Gear VR users.
