Late last month VRFocus reported on Macunx VR, a virtual reality (VR) programme that aims to make learning and remembering subjects easier, achieving Kickstarter success after only four days. Developed by Dr Aaron Ralby, founder of Macunx VR and CEO of Linguisticator, Macunx VR’s parent company, in collaboration with students at the University of Westminster, the Kickstarter has now finished, managing to hit 395 percent of its funding goal.

The campaign proved popular as those first four days raised the £3000 GBP needed to hire an experienced Unity developer to work alongside the students, thus creating the Free Build Mode that forms the central part of Macunx VR.

Sailing straight past the first funding goal Macunx VR has achieved a total of £11,868 from 168 backers, enabling the team to hit its first stretch goal at £10,000. This means that several modules of the Guided Build Mode can be created whilst laying the foundations for a third Instructor Mode.

Macunx VR’s Guided Mode will offer modules for specific subjects, walking users step-by-step through the process of creating memory palaces to learn these subjects.

“We are thrilled that Macunx VR has generated so much interest and enthusiasm through our Kickstarter”, said Dr Ralby. “The ultimate aim of the project is to change the way we learn large and complex subjects. Rather than watering subjects down to make them easier, we want to empower people to learn rigorous disciplines by unlocking the potential of their spatial minds.”

The Macunx VR platform will initially support the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), then HTC Vive and other headsets including mobile in the future. It’ll be free to use and open to anyone. Linguisticator’s website already has online courses in memory and how to build memory palaces for various subjects if you’re interested.

VRFocus will continue its VR Kickstarter coverage, reporting back with the latest campaigns.
