In August 2015 Second Life developer Linden Lab announced a new creative virtual reality (VR) platform called Project Sansar. Today the company has revealed applications are now open for content creators – professional or hobbyist – for an upcoming ‘Creator Preview’.

Up until this point only a few developers had access the platform to create social VR experiences but now its being made available to a wider audience. To apply simply head to ProjectSansar.com, with successful applicants receiving invitations during the summer.

“Creating social VR experiences is too hard and expensive today, and that limits the value and growth of this incredible new medium,” said Ebbe Altberg, Linden Lab CEO. “Creating your own VR experience shouldn’t require an engineering team, and Project Sansar will make that possible. Over the last few months, a small number of creators have already made an impressive variety of awesome social VR experiences with Project Sansar, from virtual versions of real-world locations to fantasy worlds and stylized game-like environments, and more. We’ll soon be ready for many more creators to join Project Sansar, and we can’t wait to see what people will create.”

The purpose of Project Sansar is the ability to easily create, share and monetize VR experiences. While the platform will support head-mounted displays (HMDs) like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, it’ll also work just on a desktop and mobile devices are planned for the future.

Project Sansar will go on general release towards the end of 2016, and in the meantime VRFocus will bring you any further details as announcements are made.
