Earlier in the year Oculus VR confirmed that its Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) would be launching within the first 3 months of 2016. Shortly after that the company also announced the recommended specification for PCs that would be running the device. Included on the list was Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 970 high-performance graphics card along with other aspects such as 8GB+ of RAM and at least using an Intel i5-4590 processor. While these specs are only recommended, rest assured that those that do chose the GTX 970 will be able to play ‘everything’ that’s available on the Oculus Store.
An Oculus VR member going by the name of Philanthropi recently confirmed as much on Reddit. When one fan asked the Oculus community if they should ‘settle’ for the GTX 970 or go higher, the Oculus VR employee noted: “A consumer owning a 970 will be able to play everything on our store.” That’s hardly surprising news but, given that content heading to the Oculus Store greatly ranges in graphical and mechanical aspects, it’s reassuring to know that following the recommended spec will allow you to play everything from Esper to Edge of Nowhere.
Just how long this remains the case is unclear, although anyone buying one of Oculus VR’s ‘Oculus Ready’ PCs, which the company announced back at the Oculus Connect 2 developer conference last month, will hopefully see good longevity out of their device before it’s time to upgrade. This new programme has seen Oculus VR partner with the likes of Dell, Alienware and more to provide easy to identify rigs with a label instantly informs users that their hardware is capable of running Oculus Rift titles.
Specific release details for the Oculus Rift such as a final date, price and launch line up are yet to be announced. VRFocus will continue to follow the kit closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
