There’s one type of app that’s featured on just about every smartphone, yet is oddly missing from the Gear VR mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). True, the device has a wide range of videogames and experiences on offer, but there’s yet to be a way to view some of the most sought after data on a day-to-day basis: the weather. That changes this week with the release of a new app for the kit, simply named Weather Viewer.

As seen in the screenshot above, this simple new app provides all the data that a player needs when viewing the weather forecast within a VR environment. Info is provided in real-time and the forecasted weather is simulated around the player as they use the app. One unique feature is that players can actually swipe up and down on the Gear VR’s on-board touchpad to change the type of weather within the app, allowing them to experience a very different kind of environment to the one that they’re expecting see later on.

The experience is developed by Element X Creative, a digital media studio that has worked on a number of adverts and other experiences in the past.

“Wishing for snow on a sunny day?” the app’s official description asks. “Want to unwind by watching the rain? For something different, swipe up to cycle through different weather environments. Just swipe down to return to the current forecast.”

VRFocus will continue to follow all of the latest releases of Gear VR, reporting back with any further updates on them.
