There’s a massive amount of buzz surrounding the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) right now, with creator Oculus VR recently announcing that pre-orders for the kit will go live at 08:00 PST on 6th January 2016, as well as confirming some of the free additions customers will enjoy such as Lucky’s Tale and, for those that do pre-order, EVE: Valkyrie. Amongst that excitement the company has also confirmed that its position tracked controller, Oculus Touch, has slipped from Q2 to H2 in terms of release, at the same time revealing a new design for the kit. Now new images of that design have arrived, hinting as a possible new addition to it.

Oculus VR’s official page for Oculus Touch has been updated with a wide range of new images for the devices, which give players ‘hand presence’ within VR titles and allow them to interact with objects and their environment in realistic ways. All of the features of the original Half Moon prototype such as triggers, buttons and sticks are included. What’s new, however, is a small circular patch that rests on the far side of both controllers. It’s not clear exactly what this addition – which is completely missing in the old design – is for, though fans are already speculating on the possibility of speakers or some sort of touch sensor area.

There’s also another button that features the Oculus logo. This could well serve as a way to quickly bring users back to Oculus Home, much like the back button does on a Gear VR.

Either way, expect Oculus VR to provide a better answer on what these additions means later this week when the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) gets underway in Las Vegas, Nevada. The company has a huge booth at the show and will no doubt be set to answer a wide range of questions about both the new controller and the launch of its pre-order campaign.

VRFocus will be at CES to deliver the latest updates on any and all VR tech.
