All the way back in 2014 virtual reality (VR) developer Nick Pittom ran a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign to raise funds to head out to the inaugural Oculus Connect developer conference in the September of that year. In return for successful funding, Pittom pledged to make a brand new VR videogame with the input from backers. That project has slowly morphed over the past year into Echo Red, which was announced just under a year ago today in partnership with Jason Storey. Now Pittom’s studio, Red of Paw, is finally ready to reveal a first look at Echo Red.

Pittom detailed the project in a new Kickstarter update. “Over the past year we’ve experimented with a number of ideas and directions, not least because there’s so much that CAN be done in VR, but so much that can be awesome!” he wrote. “Things took a turn when I was able to try the Vive at EGX Rezzed last year. Motion controls blew me away and I knew I had to make the game with them at the core. More recently the Oculus Touch has doubled down that feeling, and Echo Red will launch as a motion control only VR game because of this.”

In Echo Red, players will use a new system named Little Bot to interact. This sees the position tracked controllers paired with the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) being used to give players different powers and even comment on how a player is performing. Once armed players will fight monsters that present emotions. A small GIF showing the title in action can be seen here, though there’s still much to learn about its story, release and other systems and mechanics.
