Colopl NI has today announced a virtual reality (VR) tournament set to take place this weekend. Open to all, the tournament will be based on the recently released Cyberpong VR, with participants facing-off against the developers of the videogame.

The tournament, known as ‘Duel the Devs’ will be live streamed this Sunday, 15th May 2016, at 5pm PT. Hosting via the Colopl Twitch page, the tournament will see players face-off in head-to-head Cyberpong VR matches. The videogame was built with tournament-style matches in mind, and as such launching a tournament so soon after release is a presumably an effort on behalf of Colopl to build a strong community for the videogame.

Cyberpong VR is the first VR game that supports real-time match-making, so we’re pleased to offer a new kind of competitive tournament experience within the VR space,” said Jikhan Jung, CEO of colopl NI. “It will be an exciting battle to the end, so we invite players to come join us to test their skills, as well as viewers to come watch the competitions as the future is of VR eSports is here.”

VR is making an early claim for eSports, with CCP Games presenting EVE: Valkyrie tournaments at their own EVE Fanfest events for the past two years and Wargaming coming from another angle, transmitting their tournaments into Google Cardboard’s to allow those watching to do so in full 360-degrees. Colopl’s initiative sees the HTC Vive enter the fray for the first time, with Cyberpong VR allowing for online matchmaking opposed to requiring local participation.

Cyberpong VR was developed and published by Colopl NI’s San Mateo studio, which has been staffing up with VR-focused development talent from Silicon Valley to forge new VR videogames. The title is available now for the HTC Vive via Steam, priced at $14.99 USD, and VRFocus will keep you updated with future eSports activities featuring Cyberpong VR.
