Phaser Lock Interactive has announced that a new version of Final Approach is coming to Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. Set to launch on PC-based virtual reality (VR) systems soon, Final Approach: Pilot Edition will be free to early adopters of the Final Approach on HTC Vive and will gift the original title to Oculus Rift owners upon the launch of Oculus Touch later this year.
The original Final Approach has attracted a strong audience on HTC Vive due to its impressive use of roomscale technology. However, not every VR format offers this degree of freedom, and so Phaser Lock Interactive has gone back to the drawing board and redesigned Final Approach from the ground-up for the benefit of all VR formats. Enter Final Approach: Pilot Edition.
In this new edition of the videogame players will take direct control of the planes and vehicles in action on each of the maps. Opposed to simply guiding them into land, players will get behind the wheel and manually direct them in; take-off and land, plot a course to avoid collisions and take that rescue helicopter out to sea in aid of men overboard.
Speaking to VRFocus, Michael Daubert, Chief Creative Officer at Phaser Lock Interactive, said: “There are players out there right now that don’t have motion-controllers yet, on the Oculus [Rift] side, that are like ‘we want to play Final Approach!’. So we put it over to the Oculus [Rift] and started playing around with that, and that’s where the Pilot Edition came from.
“We feel that it’s a new way to experience the game without having to have the motion-controllers. It’s a seated experience, but still a compelling and unique experience in the same world.”
Final Approach: Pilot Edition will be coming to HTC Vive via Steam and Oculus Rift via Oculus Home very soon. Those who have already purchased Final Approach on Steam will received Final Approach: Pilot Edition for free, and players purchasing Final Approach: Pilot Edition via Oculus Home will receive the original Final Approach for free upon the launch of Oculus Touch later this year.
A PlayStation VR version of Final Approach: Pilot Edition is also in development, however no release date has yet been announced for the console version.
