Larger studios and publishers have been hesitant in committing to virtual reality (VR) due to a number of reasons, unlike smaller indie developers who have been the backbone of the industry. But it looks like attitudes are starting to shift as Johan Andersson, the technical director on Frostbite at Electronic Arts (EA) DICE recently tweeted the studio is now building a VR team.

In the tweet Andersson wrote: “We’re building a small & collaborative VR team in Frostbite here in Stockholm, creative & tech roles open: http://www.dice.se/jobs/ .” There’re currently five VR positions available at DICE’s base in Stockholm, Sweden, Creative Director, Sr Technical Artist, Sr Software Engineer, Sr Gameplay Engineer, Sr Rendering Engineer.

Aside from the job positions further details have yet been given on how much of the team is in place, this maybe a preliminary announcement after EA’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Blake Jorgensen recently suggested the publisher is being cautious:  “There’s some challenges still and I think the biggest challenge is just the size of the market. We don’t make games anymore for the Wii or the Wii U because the market is not big enough, the PS Vita – the Sony product – we don’t make games for that anymore because the market is too small, so it’s all about the size of the market,” during the UBS Global Technology Conference.

DICE has created some big fan favourite videogames, including Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront, while the Frostbite engine has been used on Need for Speed, Dragon Age and Plant vs. Zombies Garden Warfare.

VRFocus will continue to follow the progress of DICE’s venture into VR as further details emerge.
