Crytek Announces New “VR First” Academic Initiative

Today German-based developer Crytek the studio behind game engine CryENGINE has announced a new initiative to nurture grassroots virtual reality (VR) development worldwide. This new program is called VR First.

As part of VR First, Crytek will partner with academic institutions across the globe to provide state-of-the-art technology and facilities for both students and researchers looking to explore VR and its potential. Beneficiaries of the program will not only enjoy full source code access to Crytek’s CryENGINE development suite, but also free use of hardware from VR First affiliates. No affiliates have been announced as of yet but Crytek has revealed the initial VR First lab has been launched in Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul, with the institution acting as a pilot destination for the scheme

Its a similar method to incubator programs like the recently announced Upload Collective, seeking to build a strong foundation of resources and experience for VR to help the industry grow and expand. But where incubators tend to be based in a local area, offering business startups the means to develop, Crytek are aiming maximise knowledge and creativity the world over.

VRFocus will continue to follow the development of VR First, as Crytek partners with more academic institutions and affiliates, reporting back any further announcements.
