Powis Parker, Inc., creator of virtual reality (VR) viewers based on Google Cardboard technology, has announced the availability of its PopUp Viewer. Billed as a compact, aggressively priced viewer, Powis Parker aims to aid the growth of VR experiences in marketing campaigns, large events, trade shows and conferences, sporting events, concerts and other applications.

As with many Google Cardboard based VR viewers, people simply place their smartphone into the PopUp Viewer to engage with VR content. The PopUp Viewer works with any Android and iOS smartphone (4 – 6.5 inches), and in its compressed form it measures 8.2″ (wide) x 1.3″ (deep) x 3.25″ (tall).  Expanded for use, it measures 8″ (wide) x 2.9″ (deep) x 9.65″ (tall).

“Google Cardboard has fundamentally changed the VR market,” says Powis founder Kevin Parker. “Now, for a fraction of the cost of typical head-mounted devices (HMDs), companies can deliver compelling VR experiences to all kinds of audiences.”

Targeting a commercial audience, PopUp Viewers can be custom skinned with any type of branding, graphics or messaging to support an event or activity. The PopUp Viewer is available now via Powis Parker’s official website, with individual purchases priced at $14.99 USD. A discount is available for large, customised orders, bringing the cost under $10 per viewer.

Powis Parker is one of many mobile VR viewers based on Google Cardboard technology, which is considered an entry-level form of modern VR. Google themselves unveiled the Google Daydream earlier this year, which looks set to eclipse the current Google Cardboard trend. However, Google Daydream is going up against Samsung Gear VR, which already has a solid stake in the field of mobile VR. VRFocus will of course keep you updated with the growth of the mobile VR market as we progress towards the launch of Google Daydream later this year.
