Sandbox titles in virtual reality (VR) usually means that players can mess around to their hearts’ content, especially when trying to find objects. HALP! is a single player sandbox title for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift head-mounted displays (HMD) that does just that, and it is out now.

Created by a studio called Fun Bits, HALP! is set in a futuristic and steampunk looking world where a scavenger pirate captain has crash landed on an alien world, and it is up to the player to help him find his crew and fix their ship before spaceworms attack.

Players are encouraged to to either take on this mission, or in fact completely ignore it for the sake of curiosity – because that never killed anything – and poke around and mess will the various contraptions that you will come across. This won’t be hard to do as the environment seems to be utterly cluttered, and some of the little robots are there for you to either play with, or savagely destroy.

It seems that looking around and interacting isn’t the only thing that the player will be doing: “Put out fires! Fight giant carnivorous worms! Shoot some hoops! Make a general mess of things! There’s plenty to do in HALP!‘s colorful and light-hearted world.”

This title uses the full ability of motion controllers, but there is also the choice to use a gamepad too – although this isn’t recommended if the player wishes to have the full experience.

HALP! is out now on Steam for both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, and it is a completely free to play title.
