Dean Hall, the developer responsible for the hugely popular DayZ videogame, has revealed his next project: the virtual reality (VR) exclusive title Out of Ammo. Developed for the HTC Vive, Out of Ammo is available now via Steam Early Access.

Out of Ammo is a strategy videogame that puts the player in the position of commander as they battle against increasingly difficult waves of enemies. The player is responsible for establishing defensive lines and issuing orders, but can also directly possess units to engage in combat directly. The videogame currently features five troop types and an assortment of objects that can be placed on the map in the hope of being able to hold your position.

Out of Ammo has been designed exclusively around the HTC Vive,” reads the official description on the Out of Ammo Steam page. “Possessing your units allows you to utilize the full capability and power of the positional tracking; take cover behind sandbags, lean over a tower railing, or duck behind your sandbags and grab a grenade to throw as a last resort! Full physics applied to game objects further enhances your experience allowing you to position your magazines in the space around you ready for when you need to reload. [sic]”

RocketWerkz, the official name of the team developing the videogame, has suggested an interest in VR development previously. Hall stated that Ion, the next title from the studio, would not be coming to VR but that the team had already begun development for the HTC Vive. It could be assumed that Out of Ammo is the fruit of their labour from this period.

Available now via Steam Early Access, Out of Ammo is priced at £10.99 GBP. RocketWerkz suggest that Out of Ammo will benefit from a short development cycle of ‘2 – 6 months’, and VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details throughout this journey.
