With the release of the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) only a few short weeks away, more virtual reality (VR) videogames are being revealed. The latest is tower defence title XLR from developer Metaware the studio behind exploratory builder Metaverse.

Metaware has released a gameplay trailer for XLR that looks to use a similar design ethos as Metaverse. In the video (shown below) it begins with a round AI orb giving a brief introduction to the storyline, revealing the player is a sole survivor of an unknown mission, and as such are the ranking officer, chief scientist and chief of everything else. Players then pickup two pistols before moving to a shooting range then heading outside into a barren landscape.

Outside you’re given various defences to place including a ground turret, aerial turret, and walls. These can then be upgraded if sufficient funds are available or scrapped. An overview of the battlefield is shown before going to ground level, where you can use your acquired guns to shoot attacking alien enemies of differing designs.

In the videos description the studio states that it’s looking for testers for XLR, so anyone with a HTC Vive development kit should get in touch if interested.

As this is an early build there’s no release date given, but VRFocus will continue to follow the progress of XLR, reporting back with any further announcements.
