With the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) now out of the way, the next big industry-wide event for videogames and virtual reality (VR) will be the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) from 14th – 18th March. VR tech has had a huge presence at the show over the past two years and will this year be expanded with its own Virtual Reality Developers Conference (VRDC), running alongside the main event. Speaking at this year’s show is Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) London Studio, detailing some of the processes behind working with PlayStation VR.

SCE London has two sessions booked for GDC 2015. One will see Principal Technical Artist James Answer talk ‘Fast and Flexible: Technical Art and Rendering For The Unknown‘. The session will teach attendees to ‘build a pipeline for maximum flexibility’ when working with VR. Answer will provide ideas for ‘optimisation of art content and graphics’ in terms of both VR and traditional content, looking at examples in the company’s previous work.

The second session is ‘Maths to Mechanics: Using Mathematical logic to Implement Intuitive Gameplay‘ and is hosted by Prince Programmer Ronald De Feijter. According to the description: “Attendees will leave with a detailed understanding of the inner workings of a proven approach to implement physical interactions in VR. They will be able to take the core concepts illustrated by the examples and apply them to the interactions that are specific to their own game.” Dates and times for either talk are yet to be confirmed.

SCE London Studio is well suited to talk about VR development, having worked on some of PlayStation VR’s most popular tech demos over the past few years in The Deep and The London Heist. It remains to be seen if the company will develop a full videogame for the kit, which will be launching in the first half of 2016 at an unknown price.
