As a  VR headset owner you have undoubtedly encounter the problems with the protective foam. It is getting dirty and easily wears out. There nice-looking solution to protect your foam and give your VR headset a new and fresh presentable look.

VR Cover provides a perfect protection for the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR and HTC Vive. It perfectly fits across the foam of the headset, so that it’s is protected against dirt, sweat and wear during use. At the end of a demonstration you remove the VR Cover and simply toss it in the washing machine. VR Bites tested the VR Cover for both the gear and the Oculus Rift VR DK2.

Quality Stuff

The VR Covers are wrapped in a slick bag

After barely two weeks the VR Cover fell tightly wrapped in a plastic envelope on our doormat. The first thing that stood out after opening the package was the outstanding quality. This was no amateur or do it yourself sewing job, in stat it was high quality and very nicely finished material. The VR Covers were neatly packed in a cloth bag with the logo of the maker. The fabric is made of sturdy material and has a significant pleasant menthol and eucalyptus fragrance. We were really surprised since the photos on the website didn’t matched the quality feeling in real life.

The VR Cover with the manual

In the pouch for the Oculus Rift we find three covers, a handy strap for the cables and clear instructions printed on cardboard. The installation of the VR Cover should be very simple. On our Oculus Rift DK2 it was somewhat difficult because it is heavily used and the rubbers are terribly worn, flat and they come off from the plastic. After trying a few times, the VR Cover fits beautiful to the headset. Not only does the Rift look a lot cleaner and nicer, it feels a lot more comfortable again. A win-win situation.

Velcro is holding the cover in place

Applying the VR Cover to the Samsung Gear VR was slightly trickier. Before we put the VR cover on, we applied a new foam. A video on the website of VR Cover explains how the VR Cover can be applied on the headset. Four Velcro pads around the foam keeps the cover in place. After puzzling for a bit everything was in place well on the foam. Like the Oculus Rift, the Gear VR also felt a lot more comfortable and looked really nice.

Material and color

The covers are of high quality and well finished

The VR Covers are available in different colors and materials. You can choose the standard gray color, but there are also pink and blue fabrics available. If you sweat a lot or you’re the lucky owner of a treadmill, then the waterproof cover might be a better alternative. Do you care about organic stuff,  then the  Bamboo VR Cover is the right cover for you. Prices range from $ 15 to $ 29. At this moment there are covers for the Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift DK1 / DK2 and the HTC Vive developer edition.

Verdict

The foam on Oculus Rift DK2 is irreplaceable, for the Samsung Gear VR you can backorder foam but there’s quite a price tag: 30 euros each. For only $ 15 you get two VR Covers which prevent all this misery. Even if your foam is already flat and worn you still benefit from the VR Cover. After placing it on our worn foam, we noticed that the VR headset is a lot more comfortable again. It is therefore not only a protection, but also a good solution in order to hide old rubbers.
