If there were ever a television channel that seemed best suited to integrate virtual reality (VR) technology it would surely be Syfy, which specialises in science fiction content. As it turns out, this is one of the areas that the company is set to experiment with its newly-announced innovation studio, Syfy Labs.

This new division will work on a number of immersive and emerging technologies alongside VR. Syfy fans may recall that the company already release a VR app based on its space opera series, The Expanse, for the Google Cardboard DIY head-mounted display (HMD), and Syfy Labs will also be bringing that experience to the Gear VR mobile-based HMD in the future. It will also integrate some other series currently running on the channel, including 12 Monkeys and The Magicians.

“Syfy has a long history of using technology in innovative and unexpected ways to enhance our television programming,” said Matthew Chiavelli, Senior Vice President, Syfy Digital. “The launch of Syfy Labs formalizes our commitment to giving our viewers new ways to experience our rich content in a variety of exciting ways, on many different platforms.”
