Starbreeze AB, the company behind the StarVR head-mounted display (HMD) has been announcing several partnerships recently to bolster its virtual reality (VR) expansion. Over the past week the studio has revealed partnerships with Acer – for the design, manufacturing, promotion, marketing and sales of StarVR – and IMAX, for developing new content experiences. Today, Starbreeze AB as unveiled joint venture plans with Smilegate for a content distribution platform for StarVR.

At the moment the two companies have signed a letter of intent for the collaboration, which will form the basis of ongoing discussions between the two regarding a definite agreement. Smilegate and Starbreeze entered a long term strategic partnership back in January 2016, but the new agreement is a separate case.

“With the Acer production partnership for the StarVR headset, our joint venture with IMAX for location-based entertainment, and the content platform collaboration with Smilegate, we now have a perfect eco system for our VR centers”, said Bo Andersson-Klint, Starbreeze CEO. “Smilegate has a team of highly skilled engineers with many years of expertise in content distribution development, which we’re very excited to partner with for our location based projects.”

Founded in 2002, Smilegate is the South Korean developer behind online first-person shooter (FPS) CROSSFIRE.
