It was no surprise when consumers came to the launch day of PlayStation VR’s pre-orders to find that the bundles had sold out relatively quickly, but there has been very little comment surrounding the time scale of sales. Richard Marks of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has shared the company’s thoughts on how well the pre-orders seemed to have gone so far.

In an interview with Triangulation, a weekly tech show aired online, the Director of PlayStation VR was presented with the topic of how well the pre-orders of the console VR head-mounted display (HMD) went at 42:35, to which he replied “great, it was very fast” – but avoided revealing any numbers of the sales when pressed.

It was also said on the show that there are currently 40 million PS4 owners, which was officially announced three days ago by SIE on its latest blog. The President and Global CEO of SIE, Andrew House, said: “We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market and providing ground-breaking features and network services.”

When this topic was brought up to Dr Marks, the presenter posed the prospect of it being widely consumable and it being the “VR of choice”, to which he replied: “that’s what we’re hoping for”.

Despite the fast sell out of the pre-order bundles, PlayStation has previously stated that there will be other chances for bundles to be pre-ordered this summer, before the launch of the console HMD in October of this year.
