As this story is being written one of the biggest sports events on the planet is underway: the fiftieth annual Superbowl. Many would say the greatest sporting spectacle on television, something that is certainly true in the United States. However, over the last few years a more unusual tradition has crept into the public consciousness and its fame has spread across the internet and even grabbed some big name sponsors.
I am of course talking about Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl and it is the latest – and oddest – sporting event to get virtual reality (VR) support.
A parody of sorts of the Superbowl, the twelve year old feature showcases a contest (again, of sorts) between two sets of puppies in a small replica stadium which is filed at random intervals with a number of dog toys. When a puppy drags one of the toys into a replica end-zone a touchdown is declared. As you may imagine, scoring the extra point is somewhat impossible under the circumstances.
After an initial taster back in January a number of highlights are available as part of the Discovery VR app which and can be viewed in 360 degree video on the Google Cardboard or Samsung’s Gear VR head-mounted display. Additionally some clips are available on the Animal Planet Youtube channel. You can see the test run below.
