Professional external XLR microphone for the DJI Osmo Pocket

While testing my DJI Osmo Pocket to find the best external microphone for it I decided to try my Sennheiser ME64 cardioid microphone and have been quite stunned by the results.

The Sennheiser ME64 is a professional cardioid microphone that can be self powered, this is how I’m using it in this test.

In all of my tests this is the best dialogue sound that I’ve recorded with the Osmo Pocket. Regardless of the Pocket’s audio processing I think it sounds great with this mic and doesn’t get in the way too much.

Going by these results I’d say that this setup would be perfect and possibly the best vlogging and podcasting microphone setup for the Osmo Pocket. For my particular use I don’t think it would be going too far to say that this is the best external microphone for the DJI Osmo Pocket.

Also as far as levels are concerned and what I done in post. The recorded signal was very healthy, peaking at around -6db. All I done in post was to raise the channel fader so that the highest peak in my dialogue was just under 0db. I would usually apply a limiter in post for pieces to camera stuff but it was completely unnecessary with this audio. Basically, this is exactly as the Pocket recorded the microphone.

While I do appreciate that there are many issues with Osmo Pocket microphone adaptor and I’ve run into a fair few myself. I’m now happy that I’ve managed to pair up the Osmo pocket with a lavalaier mimic a small external omni nano mic a wireless lavalier mic and now this microphone for my main dialogue recording.

I’ve still got some ways to go before I can truly say that I know how best to use the Pocket. Things such as exposure, best gimbal settings, better control of focus etc. are all things that I have to master. But so far, I’m achieving results that are beyond what should be reasonably expected for such a small camera.

On the point of getting to know the Pocket better. There’s a few times that the focus goes a bit soft in the video and the exposure changes slightly. This is user error and not the Pocket. Once I’m more familiar with how it reacts to my lights etc. I can better lock down its functions.

Like I said in the video, I’m really starting to appreciate the outright picture quality of the Osmo Pocket and will now start testing it as a main camera locked off and not necessarily for its killer function, its gimbal.
