Double Fine made headlines earlier this week when it finally announced the long-awaited sequel to its cult platform hit, Psychonauts, in Psychonauts 2. But, perhaps even more surprisingly, that’s not the only new addition to the franchise to be revealed this week. Today at the 2015 PlayStation Experience in San Francisco the company announced Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, a spin-off that’s exclusive to the PlayStation VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD).

The official first trailer for the title can now be seen below. Double Fine’s description for the video also provides just a few extra details on the project. “It tells the story of what happens immediately after the end of Psychonauts which was always left on a cliffhanger…

“At the end of Psychonauts [spoilers you guys!] Raz is recognized as a great PSI-Cadet and is asked to join his tutors as a fully fledged Psychonaut! But just as Raz is about to go home from camp with his father, news arrives that the Grand Head of the Psychonauts (and Lili’s father) Truman Zanotto, has been kidnapped. The team, Raz and Lili included, fly off in the Psychonauts jet to rescue him.”

The trailer itself very quickly shows Raz himself putting on a PlayStation VR unit and rising up into a pose made infamous by Oculus VR Palmer Luckey on the cover of Time Magazine earlier in the year. The project is due to launch next year, which is when PlayStation VR itself is also set to launch. Details on exactly how VR will impact gameplay are yet to be revealed.

VRFocus will continue to follow Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin and is at PlayStation VR this week to deliver the latest updates on its progress.
