Yesterday Polyphony Digital began a two day event to showcase the next instalment in its racing simulator series Gran Turismo Sport. The event was live-streamed and the developer unveiled a brand new trailer for the videogame. Also announced were the release dates for Gran Turismo Sport on PlayStation 4.

Several release dates have been given depending on where you are in the world. The European PlayStation.Blog lists a date of Wednesday 16th November, with a UK release date of Friday,18th November 2016 in brackets. While on the US version of the PlayStation.Blog, Tuesday, 15th November 2016 is listed.

As VRFocus has reported before, Gran Turismo Sport has already been confirmed to support virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) PlayStation VR, but the announcement doesn’t currently state if the title will also be arriving on the headset at that time. As the PlayStation VR is due to launch a month before – although no date in October has been revealed – it’s highly likely that the HMD will also get the racing title at that time, as online retailer Amazon lists Gran Turismo Sport as PlayStation VR compatible as standard.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is the last of the big HMD manufacturers to launch a device, with Oculus Rift and HTC Vive having arrived over a month ago. The VR industry will have all eyes on the launch, seeing if SIE can avoid the same problems that have plagued its two rivals. The company has enough experience through its console launches to make sure everything runs smoothly. And with PlayStation 4’s 30 million + units sold, the HMD could become the most popular.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of PlayStation VR, reporting back with any new updates.
