Bristol-based creative technology studio Play Nicely has collaborated with The National Theatre and 59 Productions to create a free exhibition of virtual reality (VR) experiences to accompany the upcoming musical wonder.land. Play Nicely will be using a variety of different formats for the exhibition including the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) , Kinect, Google Cardboard and augmented reality (AR) face-tracking.

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s iconic story, wonder.land is a coming-of-age adventure that explores the blurred boundaries between our online and offline lives. The free exhibition was conceived by The National Theatre’s Head of Digital, Toby Coffey, who worked with designers Tom Paris and Rae Smith, to give audiences an immersive experience in addition to the stage production. This builds on the VR research the studio has already undertook with the theatre, alongside 59 Productions’ wonder.land performance visuals which were re-appropriated for the interactive exhibition.

Central to the VR experience in the exhibition is fabulous wonder.land, a VR music video, experienced through Oculus Rift. Audiences explore the 360 degree landscape of wonder.land as all around them the hypnotic garden scene sways and pulses to the sound of one of Damon Albarn’s compositions. Also included at the exhibition will be a Kinect experience allowing a physically reactive wonder.land garden experience, and an AR face-tracking magic mirror wall, wonder.land character avatar-maker. VR experience for iOS and Android will also be made available, supporting headsets like Google Cardboard.

wonder.land, is a free exhibition of digital experiences, that will run from 26th November 2015 – 30th April 2016 from 12pm each day. Further details on the musical, including ticket prices and dates can be found here.

VRFocus will continue to follow all the latest news on VR, reporting back with any new announcements.
