The Oculus Rift’s $599 USD price might have been met with some controversy, but it’s nothing compared to when the company announced that it was to be purchased back Facebook for $2 billion USD all the way back in April 2014. That news brought about a hugely negative reaction from many fans, with the likes of Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson even cancelling plans for a virtual reality (VR) edition of his title. One of the big concerns was that the platform would incorporate VR Facebook adverts but, according to Oculus VR itself, that’s not going to happen for a ‘very long time’.
VP of Product Nate Mitchell said as much talking to TechCrunch this week. “So I think for Oculus our mission with VR is really for the world to be able to experience anything anywhere with anyone,” he explained. “We want you to be able to put on this virtual reality headset and just do anything, whatever it is you want. And, when you think about the concept of experience anything with anyone and you think about Facebook as a platform for experiences, those two things really go hand-in-hand. So as VR technology evolves and we’re able to have sort of this conversation almost as if we were face-to-face in VR and have all these people here feel like they’re right here in person experiencing it with us, that’s where VR is gonna head very quickly.”
He continued, talking about how Facebook is helping to advance the tech behind the Oculus Rift too. When asked about the potential for Facebook adverts in the Oculus Rift, Mitchell replied: “I think it could, over time. We don’t have any ads today and I think it’s going to be a very long time before you see Facebook ads in VR. But VR is going to be this incredibly immersive experience that’s going to bring people together and Facebook’s mission is a more open, connected world and VR, I think, fits really well within that.”
