One of the smaller surprises in store for virtual reality (VR) fans when the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) went up for pre-order earlier this week was the return of the Oculus Remote, a small device that had initially been leaked in images last year. The tiny devices is designed as a simplistic form of input that will allow people to easily introduce others to VR with as well as operate some interfaces. It’s not a huge reveal, but its battery life is certainly that, as it’s claimed to last for around ‘4,000 hours’.

Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey stated as much in an interview with Engadget during the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada this week. “There’s also an Oculus Remote,” Luckey explained when detailed what is included with the Oculus Rift. “It’s essentially a really small, tiny, lightweight remote with just a few buttons on it that allows you to do things like play, pause, move from scene to scene without having to hold the entire gamepad. It has about 4,000 hours of battery life. It’s like a small pendant remote. It cost us a few bucks to add and for a lot of people it’s going to be a useful addition.”

Also included with the Oculus Rift is an Xbox One controller that will be used for actually playing full VR videogames, especially before the arrival of the Oculus Touch position-tracked controllers in the second half of the year. A wireless adapter to connect the device to a PC will also be inside. Those that pre-order the kit will also get a free copy of CCP Games’ multiplayer space combat title, EVE: Valkyrie, while everyone that buys a unit will also get access to Playful’s upcoming third-person platform-based adventure, Lucky’s Tale.

VRFocus will have plenty more on the Oculus Rift in the future so stay tuned.
