The Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) will be launching within the next three months. VR fans are now surer of that than ever. The first ever consumer-ready version of the device represents a huge leap forward from the second development kit (DK2) that shipped a year and a half ago, but there’s still plenty that can be improved on from here. As such, Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe has recently been talking about the ‘real desire’ to see the Oculus Rift iterated on as fast as possible.
Iribe spoke about this to Game Informer in the magazine’s most recent, VR-centric issue. “There’s a real desire to see Oculus iterate as fast as possible on hardware, and just continue to get out there and be relentless with shipping as fast as possible,” Iribe said of future releases. “We’re going to go after a broader target audience, so we’ll make it compatible with more and more machines. We’re trying to do both of these in parallel.” Indeed, balancing out the demand for new, more powerful hardware and the need to make it all much more compatible will be a big challenge for the company going forward.
In the past, Oculus VR has likened updating its VR kit to that of the smartphone industry, in which leading companies regularly release new versions of phones with increased processing power, improved displays and more. In fact, the company is literally taking part in this process with its mobile-based HMD, Gear VR, which is made in partnership with Samsung. The past year has seen three versions of the device release, with their own refinements, with the first true consumer version arriving last November and supporting Samsung’s latest phones. It remains to be seen just how quickly the second Oculus Rift will follow on from the first, however.
