2016 is the year that the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) finally launches. Videogame fans are getting ready to step into the virtual world within the space of their own homes with an extensive line-up of both launch day and launch window content. But it’s not all about videogames; the Oculus Rift will also be used to view VR movies, something which creator Oculus VR is exploring with its Oculus Story Studio team. Today, that team has released a new video looking at VR movies in 2016. That video can now be seen below.
The video assembles a wide range of talent currently working in VR film including the likes of Chris Milk from Clouds Over Sidra studio Vrse, Penrose’s Eugene Chung, and Shari Frilot of the New Frontier installation at the Sundance Film Festival that’s currently showcasing a wide range of VR experiences. There are also words from members of Oculus Story Studio itself, including Saschka Unseld, the director of the team’s first project, Lost, and its recently announced third film, Dear Angelica.
Each of these VR film figureheads gathers here to discuss the power of this new medium, with plenty of footage on display of projects such as Nomands: Maasai from Felix & Paul Studios, The Rose and I from Penrose, The Martian VR Experience from Fox Innovation Lab and, of course, Henry from Oculus Story Studio itself. It comes off the back of Oculus VR’s reveal of Quill, a new internal creation software that it’s using to help build its experiences, utilising the Oculus Touch position-tracked controllers.
Lost, Henry, and Dear Angelica are all expected to launch at some point this year, with the Oculus Rift itself launching on 28th March 2016. For the latest on the HMD and all of its compatible experiences, keep reading VRFocus.
