HP launches Reverb G2 high resolution VR headset

HP has created a new high resolution VR headset called the Reverb G2. As with its predecessor the Reverb, the Reverb G2 has a resolution of 2160 x 2160 per eye, with a refresh rate of 90 hz.  However, it has two additional sensors on the side for better tracking, has the same advanced off-ear speakers in the Valve Index, and new controls similar to those of the popular Oculus Rift S and Oculus Quest.   Here’s why it could become the best VR headset for viewing 360 photos and videos.

Reverb G2 is among the highest resolution VR headsets for consumers.  By comparison, the Valve Index and Samsung Odyssey have a resolution of only 1440 x 1600, while the Oculus Rift S has a resolution of 1280 x 1440, so the Reverb G2’s resolution is 2.5x more than the Rift S and 2x more than the Valve Index and Samsung Odyssey.  In addition, the Reverb G2 uses independent displays for each eye and has a true IPD adjustment (not just a simulated IPD adjustment).

The new controllers are similar to those of the Oculus Rift S, which could make it easier to use the Reverb G2 to play Oculus games through Revive.

The two additional side sensors should be a significant improvement.  In my preview of the original Reverb, I mentioned that the reason I didn’t get one is because my other two Windows Mixed Reality VR headsets have had controller tracking issues when the controllers are off to the side.  It’s as if HP read my mind and addressed that precise issue in the Reverb G2 through these additional sensors.  The Reverb G2 looks like it could become the best consumer VR headset for viewing 360 photos and videos.  Reverb G2 will be available for $600.  If you’re interested in a review of the Reverb G2, let me know in the comments.  If there’s enough interest, I’ll order one.
