It would have been hard to have missed out on the simple mobile videogame phenomenon that was Flappy Bird three years ago, and now it seems as though the concept will still live on but in the shape of new virtual reality (VR) title Leave the Nest, one of the newest releases for the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD).
Although Leave the Nest echoes the popular mobile videogame, it builds on each aspect of the game to create a more suitably immersive experience with its blocky 3D surroundings, and more physically-demanding gameplay. It is not only the bird that must flap its wings but the player too as the title takes the HTC Vive’s motion controllers into full consideration, requiring the player to flap their arms up and down to advance each level, avoiding any obstacles you may come across. There are a range of environments to flap through, including Persian cities, volcanic vistas, and more.
The design of the videogame aimes to give added player satisfaction as players can earn bonus points, collect coins and power-ups, and multipliers as they work their way through each level, but flying high will cost you: “flying high will earn you that ever so valuable 2x bonus, but you can’t stay up there forever as the air’s too thin to flap.”
There isn’t strictly multiplayer for the title, but you are able to compete against the scores of other players around the world, as well as against your own personal best scores.
It is acknowledged by the developers that there is a risk of dropped frames, and so it is advised that while playing to try and turn off Interleaved Reprojection in SteamVR’s performance settings to ensure the most comfortable play in VR.
You can purchase Leave the Nest at a discounted price of £5.94 GBP, 15% less than the original £6.99 on Steam, and this promotion will end on 3rd June.
