Fabric Software the company behind development platform Fabric Engine 2, which encorporates Canvas, a visual programming system anyone to develop VFX, videogames, virtual reality (VR) and visualisation tools has announced the release of Kraken 1.2.

Kraken is a cross-platform and open-source rigging framework that allows technical directors to create custom rig components that produce identical results across different animation applications such as Autodesk Maya and Autodesk Softimage.

Originally developer by Hybride Technologies, a division of Ubisoft the project went open source with both Hybride and Fabric continuing development with contributions from multiple studios including Oculus VR.

One of the new features added in the update is Biped workflow. This allows developers to quickly create pre-built Biped guides and generate rigs from those guides using new components and menu items

Fabric Engine CEO Paul Doyle said: “Kraken is free to everyone. We’ve provided a solid foundation for the system and will continue to improve on it with each new release. Involvement from the community is very welcome and we’ve had significant interest and contributions already from the Oculus Story Studio team. They’ve provided amazing feedback to help drive the direction of the system. We encourage everyone to fork the repo and take it for a spin and provide feedback on their experience.”

Back in October 2015 the company launched Fabric Engine 2 after almost 600 customers participated in the beta programme. Then in April 2016 Fabric Software announced an update to its virtual reality (VR) tools which included integration with freeform modelling package Rhino 3D.
