Jaunt has a wide reach of virtual reality (VR) and 360-degree content, from music to entertainment, and it has also spread to the other side of the world from its origin to China to bring cinematic VR to themeparks. Now the Californian-based VR producers and publishers have teamed up with Camp4 Collective to create a four-part extreme sports series.
The Home Turf series follows four different daring sportsmen who partake in sports such as free climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, and slacklining. This series, however, doesn’t just concentrate on the sports, but instead on the stories of their homes, adventures, and where they go to perform these sports. Home Turf had been shot over a series of days in each location with Jaunt producing each episode using its own end-to-end VR production from footage capture, which often relied on drones to carry the cameras, to the post-production.
The four episodes include Needles, which follows the free climbing legend Alex Honnold, where he climbs to the peaks of the Needles in California with no ropes, harnesses, or carabiners; Rampage, which follows Cam Zink who mountain bikes across Utah, and takes viewers to the Rampage course where RedBull hosts its annual Freeride event; Iceland, where 19-year-old Galen Vlockhausen kayaks the 65 foot Aldeyjarfoss, a natural phenomenon in Iceland where “nature still rules”; and Moab, which sees slackliner Sketchy Andy balance 1,500 feet above the desert floor in Utah where he also uses the space to replect on “personal progression”.
In a press release, Cliff Plumer, President of Jaunt Studios, commented on the quality of this new extreme sports series: “These almost surreal locations are places most people will never travel and now they’re getting unprecedented access.
“There’s no better way to capture the intensity of these athletes and locations than with full 360-degree viewing in VR.”
The first episode, Needles, is now available on the Jaunt app, with the later videos to be released weekly, all of which will be available on iOS, Android, Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Desktop 360.
