Developer Insomniac Games is certainly throwing itself into the development of virtual reality (VR) videogames. Its first VR title Edge of Nowhere was released very recently to positive reviews and since April we’ve already known it has two more in the works called Feral Rights and The Unspoken, both of which will be extremely different in terms of genre, design, and gameplay. Now, amongst the flurry of exciting VR news that’s been coming out of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we’re getting the chance to see brand new screenshots from Insomniac’s magic title, The Unspoken.
The Unspoken is a first person action game that will task players with casting spells against one another, bringing elements of fantasy and magic into realistic environments. The title will be exclusive to the Oculus Rift and support the Oculus Touch controllers which players will have to use to cast their spells using gestures of varying complexity. When we spoke to Insomniac about the title upon its announcement, they described The Unspoken as “very much of the Urban Magic genre, your entry point is an urban magician’s fight club, and you fight in concealed locations across the city of Chicago.” By using the Oculus Touch controllers to create a skillful spell casting system, the title will marry “the physical action of a fighting game to the dynamic battlefield of an arena shooter.” Magic fight club? That definitely sounds interesting.
The screenshots released at E3 shown below give a glimpse into how the game brings fantastical magic elements into a gritty city setting and show that players will be able to see their hands and their movements in-game in order to create a greater sense of presence for themselves and other players.
The Unspoken is expected to be released in the Holiday period of 2016 and VRFocus will keep following its progress, reporting news as it happens.
