David Jaffe is well known for not holding back when it comes to sharing opinions. For over two decades the developer made his viewpoints on videogames and more clear through interviews, Twitter posts and video blogs. Recently, the God of War creator turned his attention to virtual reality (VR) technology and PlayStation VR, Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) head-mounted display (HMD) for the PlayStation 4. It appears the developer has only just tried the kit for the first time, and his first impressions are very positive.

It seems that Jaffe sampled PlayStation VR for the first time earlier this month at the 2015 PlayStation Experience fan event. Following his demo he took to Twitter to write: “Just tried PLAYSTATION VR for first time. Holeeeeeeeeee fuck!!!!!!! So so so in love!” A little later on the man behind Twisted Metal revealed that he had tried SCE London Studio’s London Heist demos, noting that they had made him even more or a ‘VR believer’ and that he wanted to return to those worlds as he missed them.

A few days after this Jaffe again spoke up on Twitter to deliver a series of messages about his thoughts on VR, which VRFocus has compressed into the following paragraph: “After a few days away from PSVR, here is what I think: core games with clear win/fail states and/or goals are not served by VR because trying to solve a puzzle/quest/reach a goal is already so engaging that the presentation does not matter. BUT VR experiences such as the 2 London Hesit [sic] demos at PSX that don’t really challenge you but instead lead you down a path with very few fails really make it clear that VR is the FUTURE of storytelling, travel, immersion, and connection. I’m such a fan and so excited to work on a VR game!”

Jaffe last worked on the PlayStation 3 incarnation of Twisted Metal and is now working on a new free-to-play third-person shooter for the PlayStation 4 named Drawn to Death. No date for this intriguing release has been given but hopefully the developer could start to work on VR following its launch. VRFocus will continue to follow Jaffe’s work in VR, reporting back with any further updates.
