Tomorrow is the big day for Oculus VR, Samsung, and their Gear VR mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). Pre-orders for the first ever consumer version of the device are expected to land in the US on 20th November 2015, providing many with their first taste of true consumer VR. As expected, then, the reports of the first Gear VR units finally shipping are starting to come in online.

Reddit user Wootangy is one of the first to go online and state that a pre-ordered Gear VR unit has shipped. This unit was apparently ordered from Best Buy, with some other fans noting that their Amazon pre-orders were yet to start shipping. All units are likely to be sent on their way today, however, given the release date.

Gear VR costs $99 USD over in the US and works with Samsung’s entire range of 2015 phones. That includes the flagship Galaxy S6, curved Galaxy S6 edge, enlarged Galaxy Note 5 and the combination of the previous two in the Galaxy S6 edge plus. A number of developers have been releasing titles and experiences for the device in the run up to launch. This includes Monument Valley developer Ustwo Games with its latest puzzle-based experience, Land’s End as well as Robot Invader with its new first-person murder mystery, Dead Secret.

Release dates for the Gear VR in other territories outside of the US are yet to be officially confirmed, though Samsung Netherlands has posted its pre-orders listing with a 21st November date. A listing in Germany has also appeared but, so far, other countries are yet to have the device put up for sale. Both of these territories are offering the device for €99 EUR, however.

VRFocus will continue to follow Gear VR closely, reporting back with the latest updates on the kit’s progress.
