Epic Games has been a keen supporter for virtual reality (VR) technology over the past few years, integrating head-mounted displays (HMDs) into its Unreal Engine 4 middleware. The company has also produced a range of tech demos, usually to help demonstrate the latest kit from Oculus Rift creator Oculus VR. Its latest demo, Bullet Train, made its debut at the Oculus Connect 2 developer conference back in September 2015. But, while Bullet Train was revealed as a tech demo, there is a chance that company could ship it as an actual product.

Founder and industry legend Tim Sweeney said as much during the VR Intelligence Conference and Expo (VRX) in San Francisco, California this week. Speaking in his ‘The Impact of VR and AR on the Future of Gaming‘ session, Sweeney noted that the developer could ship Bullet Train as a ‘small but enjoyable game’ somewhere down the line. Epic Games has traditionally released its VR tech demos for HMD owners to sample and pick apart, but this makes it seem like Bullet Train could one day be a more official release from the company.

Bullet Train uses the new Oculus Touch position-tracked controllers. Set in a train station, this first-person experience allows players to simply have fun realistically aiming and firing weapons using the controllers. Enemies swarm in from all sides and players are easily able to teleport around the room, tossing grenades and blasting away in a carefree fashion. VRFocus was one of the first to go hands-on with Bullet Train and came away immensely impressed with the experience that was on offer, indeed hoping something more would come from it.

VRFocus will continue to follow Bullet Train and Epic Games’ work in VR, reporting back with the latest from the company.
